无论观察精进到了何种地步，在我们的构想中它都依然会有变得更加完备更加精确的空间。科学的任务一一去澄清具体之物、去澄清感性之物一一是个无穷无尽的过程，永远也不可能真正完成。这样一来，我们就不能再像古典时代那样把具体的感性之物看作仅仅是有待被科学认识所扬弃的表面现象。被知觉的事实以及一般意义上的世界历史事件不能够从一些号称构成了宇宙之永恒面孔的规律中演绎出来；而是恰恰相反：规律仅仅是对物理事件的近似表达，所以说规律永远也不可能彻底澄清其晦暗。如今的科学家已经不再像古典时代的科学家那样抱有通达事物之核心、通达客体之本身这样一个幻想了。关于这一点，相对论物理学确证了绝对而最终的客观性是个虚幻的妄想——通过向我们证明每一次观察都严格地系于观察者的位置，都和观察者的处境密不可分；通过使得绝对的观察者这样一个看法被摒弃。我们不可沾沾自喜地以为可以在科学中通过运用纯粹且非处境的理智抵达那不带任何人类痕迹的对象一一正如上帝所见那般。

然而，随着非欧几何的兴起，这一切都变了：我们开始认为空间本身就是弯曲的，我们开始认为位移这一事实本身就会改变物体，我们开始认为空间的各个部分和各个维度是不能互换的，这些部分和维度会对在其中进行位移的物体施加某些改变。由此，世界中的同一和变化就不再被各自归因于相互间了然无涉的原则；世界中的物体就不再能够自处于一个绝对的同一性中，世界的形式和内容就被混合了起来，世界就不再是欧氏几何的均质空间所描述的那个僵化的框架结构。故此，严格地把空间和空间里的物体区分开就变得不再可能了，严格地把作为纯粹概念的空间和具体地呈现给我们的感官的空间区分开就变得不再可能了。
